Understanding 503(a) vs 503(b)

503(b) Pharmacies

FDA-registered outsourcing facilities held to the same manufacturing standards as brand-name drug manufacturers (cGMP). They undergo regular FDA inspections, and their products have verified beyond-use dates supported by stability testing. There are only about 90 503(b)s in the US.

503(a) Pharmacies

Traditional compounding pharmacies regulated by state boards of pharmacy. They offer more flexibility for personalized formulations but have varying standards depending on state regulations. There are approximately 12,000 503(a)s in the US.
